Project Type: Public
Project: New Plymouth Airport
Client: New Plymouth District Council
Role: Creative Design Excellence Specialists
After the director, Jo, had spent some years working with New Plymouth District Council on the Len Lye Centre Art Gallery project, she had spent a lot of time landing, waiting and leaving the local airport. The Council asked us to come onboard and help them with the creative vision for replacing and expanding their existing airport. We worked with the project team to look at the new design in a holistic manner and seek design opportunities and inspiration to create a successful new design for the new airport.
The first thing we did was to acknowledge the various opportunities that we had for creating a positive impact on visitors arriving in New Plymouth. We saw the first opportunity for creating an impact on visitors as creating an interesting arrival experience from the sky. The circular form opens towards Mt Taranaki and creates an expandable terminal format. The form also allowed us to reformat the car parking in a creative way where we have an ever changing, colourful arrangement of cars, in a manner that creates a type of landart from above. This is the kind of creative process that we worked through with the team.
