Project Type: Residential renovation
Location: NSW, Australia
Located near Byron Bay, perched across gently on the slope, opening toward sweeping views of Australia’s East Coast, this beach home was designed as a quiet celebration of light, space, and connection. With a relatively compact and constrained building envelope and limited openings along the sides, the challenge became an opportunity: to carve out a luminous heart within the home.
At its core, a light-filled entrance axis draws you in—an inviting, central space that naturally becomes a place for gathering, conversation, and pause. This spine of light doesn’t just animate the social areas; it gently spills into the surrounding bedrooms, softening the boundaries between private and shared spaces in a way that maximises the number of guests while still creating a beautiful communal space.
The material palette reflects the client’s vision of a timeless white timber beach house—fresh, relaxed, and enduring. Its form and detailing thoughtfully echo the traditional gabled home nestled at the base of the hill, creating a dialogue between old and new. The result is a home that feels both grounded in its setting and elevated by design—an inspiring reminder that even within constraints, thoughtful architecture can transform the everyday into something extraordinary.
